BOSTON RED SOX 2008 Topps Official Team BASEBALL CARD SET
The Yankees' offense is still in hibernation, but the pitching is in mid-season form. Starter Chien-Ming Wang went into the 7th inning, and threw 4-hit ball for the Yankees, earning his second win of the young season (2-0). Wang is again showing why he is the ace of the Yankees' staff.
Wang held the Rays hitless into the 5th inning, and was not helped much by the Yankees offense, which has scored a measly 17 runs in the first six games of the season total. At that rate, it is a miracle that the Yankees are at 3-3. The only thing saving the Yankees from the division basement is, amazingly enough, the Boston Red Sox, dead last at 3-4. The surprising Baltimore Orioles are atop the division at 4-1. It is as if someone turned the division on its head.
Joe Girardi, back in the dugout after two games out with the flu, saw the Yankees stop a two-game losing streak to the Tampa Bay Rays. Hideki Matsui's two-run home run in the 4th inning was the sole offensive output supplied by the vaunted Yankees offense on the day.
Tampa bay, in return, collected only four hits total on the day, as the Yankees pitching was very sharp. Joba Chamberlain was again fantastic, pitching two perfect innings, to get to Mariano Rivera. Rivera earned his third save of the young season by pitching a perfect 9th inning, which included two strikeouts.
The Yankees offense needs to come alive, and provided the pitching can look anything like today, it should bode well for the Yankees chances.
